A SUSHI BAR
WITH
A HEART OF OAK

If you happen to have a glasshouse in your garden, why not turn it into a sushi bar? That’s what they must have thought at Radisson Blu Bucharest. Turning a glasshouse into a warm, cozy place was a challenge. Yet one we loved to face! Read the story about the Ginger Sushi Bar in Bucharest here.

Every design starts with a story. When we dug up the history of the Radisson Blu hotel in Bucharest and its location, we found the hotel is situated in one of the oldest streets of Bucharest: the Calea Victoriei. In the 1690’s the roads were not yet paved which resulted in bad, muddy infrastructure. That’s why Lord Brancoveanu ordered to have a road built with oak beams. Et voilà, sometimes that’s all it takes. The link between the rhythm of the wooden planks and the design of the room was born, the rest is history.

The glass ceiling, as well as the glass walls, were partially cladded with wooden strips. During the day they filter the light, taking away the glasshouse feeling. When the night falls, the wood instantly creates a cozy atmosphere in the bar.

While tasting the delicious sushi on your plate at Ginger, a few special materials stand out. First, there’s the herringbone flooring that is realized in metal and oak parquet. A contrast that catches the eye with a high-end look. Just like the black Arte wall covering that was used throughout the restaurant. Not to mention the true eye catcher of the place: the marble bar at the center of the restaurant. It’s outstanding because of its stunning material, while it creates an experience; the sushi is prepared right in front of your eyes. Arte, Il Granito and Marc Heylen, all Belgian suppliers we took with us to Bucharest because of their craftsmanship.

To make the place look bigger, we added a mirror. Optically, the sushi bar looks twice as big because of it.
